I attended a magnificent concert a while ago and was blown away with the whole choreography of the music event, especially its lightings.

"It must be by a Japanese!" my gut said, though the concert was meant for Chinese singing sensation, Faye Wong. Hence, to prove myself correct I headed back home trying to find out who's the choreographer for the concert. "Google!", was the first thing that came to my mind. After a few failed attempts trying to search for 'Faye Wong's Concert Choreographer' online, I gave up.

It was only till recently that I chanced upon an article mentioning the backstage creative team that was handling her concert. Mitsumasa Hayashi is the name I was looking for. The mastermind responsible for the fantastic stage lightings during the concert.

You guys ought to check out his works from his company, Hayashi Office's website. Definitely an eye-opener!

TBWA London has joined forces with a number of illustrators to create the Eastern Eggs project: a series of rather beautiful wooden eggs that can be purchased online, with all proceeds going to the Red Cross Japan Tsunami Appeal.

Designs from illustrators such as Damien Weighill, Jan Kallwejt and Nick Purser are included in the project. Each egg is approximately 6cm high, made from solid wood and costs £10.

The eggs are all printed using an Egg-bot, an open-source art robot that can draw on spherical or egg-shaped objects. You can see the making in action below.

GOOD asked readers to reinvent the standard recipe with a graphic twist to make it more fun. And I was amazed by the submissions people sent in!

{ Fruity Juice }

Chanced upon these interesting juice packaging while researching for my work. This series of creative fruit juice packages are designed by Naoto Fukasawa, a Japanese industrial designer who is best known for his MUJI's CD Player (part of the permanent collection, MoMA New York). They were first featured at Scotland's Arts and Design Exhibition in 2008.

This new concept from Fukasawa took industrial design to a whole new level. His intention was to create packaging that accurately represents the actual fruit's skin in colour and texture. With that in mind, he created banana, strawberry, kiwi and soymilk (which resembles a block of tofu) design.

"I imagines that if the surface of the package imitated the colour and texture of the fruit skin, then the object would reproduce the feeling of the real skin."

The actual production of the juice series would likely be too costly to get them on the supermarket shelves, but I think alot of designers would be inspired by these unconventional packaging.

{ Disco Booth, Anyone? }

Initially what drew me to the Trans-Cool TOKYO exhibition at 8Q SAM was Yoshitomo Nara's paintings. But after my visit, what really "wowed" me was Kiichiro Adachi's e.e.no.24, a disco booth installation.

e.e.no.24, a Museum of Comtemporary Art Tokyo collection, was a converted telephone booth serves as a one-man disco for those self-conscious of their body in public. The mirrored interior of the booth reassures (albeit falsely) the person inside that he/she is not exposed to the outside world, when in reality this is so.

Exploring concepts of society's gaze and its reflection, Adachi heightens one's perception and sensitivity to the immediate society and community one is living in. The work in particular comments on the supposed anonymity that technology such as the Internet gives people today, but this anonymity is in reality a false one.

The exhibit features a projection video (shown above) and the actual disco booth, visitors are encouraged to experience dancing to one's heart content inside. As expected, Singaporeans being Singaporeans were shy about stepping into the lighted booth. All those that I've encountered just stood there watching the video.

As a curious cat, I went into the booth, closed the door and put on the headphones. Nope, I didn't dance (too self-conscious to do that!) but I managed to experience what it is like. And I must said I totally understand why people in the video can dance their hearts out inside.....it's a COOL experience!

Been wanting to go to Trans-Cool TOKYO Exhibition held in Singapore's 8Q SAM and I just managed to do that this Christmas Day. :) As from the name of the exhibition, one would guess that it got to do with the Japanese culture.

Bingo! You are right!

Featuring 40 artworks from the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo collection, this exhibition tells the story of how Japanese artists, since the second half of the 1990s, have established their own creative identities within the context of global pop culture. From Yayoi Kusama's pioneering works of Japanese Pop Art to Yasumasa Morimura's role-playing in his portraits from the 1980s, the exhibition Trans-Cool TOKYO provides an opportunity to view works by these groundbreaking Japanese artists who have made an indelible impact on contemporary art.

Working across all mediums, from painting and sculpture, to performance, photography and video, the featured artists have created work in response to the onset of the information age and the greater freedoms and uncertainties that are available in contemporary society.

Artistes featured in the exhibition includes Kohei Nawa, Yoshitomo Nara, Takashi Murakami, Michihiro Shimabuku, Kiichiro Adachi etc.

ISABELLE is the famous brand of wedding cakes in Taiwan, the identifiable slogan “Marry me!” is also as well-known as its brand. However, during the financial crisis the marriageable men and women feared for marriage or married later, those phenomena caused the marriage rate to decline in Taiwan, and also impacting the sales volume of wedding cakes. For that reason, the advertising strategy of ISABELLE in 2009 focused on continuing the slogan “Marry me!” and separated from competitors’ advertising theme, exotic romance, which is far away from real life of the people at marriageable age. Consequently, we would like to design an advertising which closes to real life of consumers and makes the brand image of ISABELLE younger and more real, moreover, rising the brand favourability of young generation and creating a popular topic for the marriageable men and women who are aged 25 to 35. Under the situation of low marriage rate, we attempted through the advertising to bring out the idea of marriage and motivate our target audiences say out “Marry me!” bravely. Afterwards, the marriage rate could be rose, the sales volume of wedding cakes could be increased as well.

First stop in the Land of Dragons - Ullens Center for Contemporary Art (UCCA), located in the infamous 798 Art District of China capital, Beijing. To be exact, I wasn't actively looking for art museums to go to in China (been in the midst of settling into a new culture).

UCCA is a non-profit, comprehensive art center founded in Beijing by collectors Guy and Myriam Ullens. The museum/exhibitions space presents works of established and emerging artists and develops a trusted platform to share knowledge through education and research. They also create a platform of dialogue between China and the rest of the world.

Feeling abit low after hearing about the death of French-born American sculptor, Louise Bourgeois. Yet another inspiring female artist left us.

Pity.

It was her 2008 sales of a 2.4m spider that made her the best-paid living woman artist around, after a buyer paid US$4.5 million for it.

My close encounter with her infamous Maman (giant-sized spider sculpture) has left a deep image in my mind. And I was especially grateful that I am able to come close with the spider. :)

Not long ago, I wrote an entry on an amazing street art I saw while in Tokyo. Little do I know about the artist, or you can said I had totally no idea who's the talent behind the outstanding store.

Till....

Recently while attending Singapore Design Film Fest, I caught a show called Beautiful Losers. Bingo! I saw the artist! Barry Mcgee is his name. Ignorant me, totally got no idea the artist behind the unique store is actually one of the top American street artist around.

Well...to me everyday is a learning day :)

Barry Mcgee, better known as Twist (Twister, Twisty, Twisto) or Ray Fong, was born on 1966 in San Francisco, California. He is a painter and graffiti artist who graduated from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1991 majoring in painting and printmaking.

His work draws heavily from a pessimistic view of the urban experience, which he describes as, "urban ills, overstimulations, frustrations, addictions & trying to maintain a level head under the constant bombardment of advertising".

McGee's paintings are very iconic, with central figures dominating abstracted backgrounds of drips, patterns and color fields. He has also painted portraits of street characters on their own empty bottles of liquor, painted flattened spray cans picked up at train yards and painted wrecked vehicles for art shows.

He popularized use of paint drips in urban-influenced graphic design, as well as the gallery display technique of clustering paintings.

A week ago, I watched DesignFilmFest's Beautiful Losers. The documentary featuring some of the top American street artists. I must said I felt very much inspired after the show.

Beautiful Losers takes us into the world of street art. To many, graffiti are nuisance and ugly, even consider a form of vandalism. But to some of us, it's a form of expression.... Little do I know about the scene of street art, the movie brings me closer into their world and their thoughts behind the artists' creations.

In the early 1990's a loose-knit group of likeminded outsiders found common ground at a little NYC storefront gallery. Rooted in the DIY (do-it-yourself) subcultures of skateboarding, surf, punk, hip hop & graffiti, they made art that reflected the lifestyles they led. Developing their craft with almost no influence from the "establishment" art world, this group, and the subcultures they sprang from, have now become a movement that has been transforming pop culture.

Recently I visited Ai Weiwei's Exhibition, "According to what?" at Mori Art Museum, Tokyo, Japan. I was excited about the exhibition when I first came to know about it while surfing Mori Art Museum's website. I felt extremely lucky that I was able to visit the exhibition during my stay in Japan as Ai Weiwei is one of China's most prominent and provocative artists around.

"According to what" brought much inspiration to me, making me realise how cultural rich China is. Not to forget, the numbers of talented Chinese artists around. I have to say Chinese are one of the world's most patriotic people. They love their country as if it's their lives. Maybe not for all Chinese, but certainly the case for Ai Weiwei. The exhibition showcased a numerous of art pieces with rich Chinese heritage and background, in the fusion of old-meet-new, east-meet- west concept.

If you are familiar with Ai Weiwei, he is renowned for his rising profile in the architecture world and of course, his contribution in the design of the Olympic National Stadium known as the Bird's Nest for the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing. And with his background on architectural, symmetrical forms and shapes are a common sight in his exhibition.

Needless for me to comment further, "A picture says a thousand words".....

Ai Weiwei is one of China's most prominent and provocative artists with a rising profile in the architecture world. Mr. Ai helped design the Olympic National Stadium known as the Bird's Nest for the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing.

Known for his sharp tongue, Mr. Ai has been challenging the government to end what he calls its cover-up of incompetence in managing the response to an earthquake in May 2008 in Sichuan Province that killed more than 80,000 people. Defying Web censors in March 2009, he has created a sensation by posting angry commentaries about the quake rescue efforts on his popular blog. He not only criticizes the government's response but also chides officials for not yet providing a full accounting of schoolchildren's deaths, which he and many others attribute to poorly constructed schools.

The postings are unusual in that they have not yet been censored or removed from the Internet. Mr. Ai is being allowed to criticize the government sharply about a very delicate topic in Beijing.

Mr. Ai's father, Ai Qing, was perhaps the best-known poet of his generation, and among the most acclaimed Chinese literary figures of the 20th century. During the Cultural Revolution, Mr. Ai and his family were exiled from Beijing for nearly 20 years. The family lived in Xinjiang, a region in northwest China, and later further north in a quasi-military re-education camp on the edge of the Gobi Desert. They were allowed to return when Mr. Ai was 19; his father was exonerated in 1978.

Mr. Ai attended the Beijing Film Institute and later studied briefly at the Parsons School of Design and the Art Students League in New York. Returning to China, he restored the family name to prominence while producing sharply political artwork.

Mr. Ai, who is not new to controversy, is known for his avant-garde photographs and sculptures and for his blend of traditional Chinese elements and modern style.

Provide an explanation if the author uses something your audience isn’t likely to understand — “The first words of Joyce’s ‘Stately, plump Buck Mulligan’ are Introibo ad altare dei [‘I will go to the altar of God’].” You might need to supply a detail not in the original quotation, especially if your reader is likely to be confused: “As Fairbanks notes, ‘The death of three civil rights workers in Philadelphia [Mississippi] marked a turning point.’” You might also provide a first name: “It was [George] Eliot’s most successful work.” Always the question is whether the clarification will help your audience.

If you’re changing a single word or a short phrase, especially a pronoun, and the word isn’t especially interesting in its own right, it’s okay to omit the original and replace it with the bracketed interpolation: you can change “In that year, after much deliberation, he issued the Emancipation Proclamation” to “In [1862], after much deliberation, [Lincoln] issued the Emancipation Proclamation.”

The sign used to mark a major division in a sentence to indicate that what follows is an elaboration, summation, interpretation, etc., of what precedes; and to separate groups of numbers, as hours from minutes (5:30) or the elements of a ratio or proportion (1:2).

A short line used to connect the parts of compound words or the parts of a word divided for any purpose. Hyphens are joiners. Use them to avoid ambiguity or to form a single idea from two or more words.

( ) - Parentheses
Either or both of a pair of signs used in writing to mark off an interjected explanatory or qualifying remark. Use parentheses ( ) to include material that you want to de-emphasize or that wouldn't normally fit into the flow of your text but you want to include nonetheless.

? - Question Mark
A mark indicating a question. Seriously.

" - Quotation Mark
One of the marks used to indicate the beginning and end of a quotation. Direct quotations are another person’s exact words — either spoken or in print — incorporated into your own writing.

. - Period
A full pause, as is made at the end of a complete sentence. The point or character used to mark the end of a declarative sentence or to indicate an abbreviation.

The punctuation mark used to indicate a major division in a sentence where a more distinct separation is felt between clauses or items on a list than is indicated by a comma, as between two clauses of a compound sentence.

“Working with kids is fun because I can openly plot to rip off their wild stylings and there’s nothing they can do about it!” – Travis Millard

Travis Millard creates some of the quirkiest and most endearing drawings full of characters it's tough not to relate to. This illustrator also has a great sense of humor. He live in a log cabin in Echo Park, Los Angeles, California with his illustrator girlfriend, Mel Kadel. Art has always been in the blood of Travis, his mother used to do a lot of crafty toll painting and small oil pieces with folksy sayings. She'd always encourage Travis and his brother to draw or make a cardboard fort or anything else just to keep their hands busy.

I came across Travis Millard's works from Juxtapoz Magazine. The illustrations are somewhat quirky and extremely well-crafted. He seems to have ordinary objects magnified and interpreted in a different perspective, usually depicting politics satirized, personal strife, fabricated characters and aggressive violence. His works are true evidence of passion do get you far.

Posters have acted as mirrors and visual records of our culture and history. Whilst posters have been used by governments and many private organisations to promote all kinds of products, posters have also been employed on the service of war, peace and propaganda. Placed in public environments, posters are effective in promoting causes and speaking directly to the mass.

An exhibition held in National Library Building's Central Public Library Basement 1, from 3rd Sep - 15 Oct 2009, showcased past years public posters of Singapore. This exhibition features how Singapore has evolved in their government's advertising campaigns.

While walking through the exhibition space, I seem to be walking through my childhood too as I saw some familiar campaign posters from the past. I have to admit local posters really come a long way, but sadly I feel that posters from the earlier days seem to speak to the public better and hence leave a long-lasting impression. I wonder how many people actually feel the same as me? Have a look at some of the featured posters and you'll be your own judge.

{ Johanna Basford }

I was reading through CR Blog when I come across this illustrator, Johanna Basford who has a very distinctive style of illustration. She does only black and white ornamental motif-like illustrations. Her work is so outstanding and bold that CR Blog has to feature her in their blog updates.

This is what happened....Johanna was trying to promote herself to Creative Review and she created a direct mailer for the Editor of Creative Review. She literally recreated her own version of a CR magazine cover which also consisted of her self-promoting CD inside. Nicely-packed in a nostalgic brown paper warp, the package was sent off to London for the CR team.

About the Artist.....

Inspired by her upbringing on a small fish farm in rural Aberdeenshire, Scotland, much of Johanna's work has roots in the flora and fauna that she has grown up with. Her wandering imagination and passion for drawing took her to Art School in Dundee, where she graduated with a first class honours degree in Printed Textiles in 2005.

Having dabbled with the idea of moving to London, Johanna decided the concrete clad city sapped her creativity. She set up her small Scottish studio creating distinctively different hand drawn motifs in her signature black and white palette.

She embraces the challenge of a cross disciplinary approach, creating designs and surface patterns for everything from ceramics, to bedlinen, catwalk fashion, packaging, wallpaper, wedding stationary and visual merchandising. Her ever-growing list of happy customers includes names such as The Crafts Council at the Victoria and Albert Museum, DKNY, The BBC, The Scottish Parliament, Heals, Queensberry Hunt, Hendricks Gin, The Body Shop and Johnson and Johnson.

It's just hilarious watching how they mock about each other. Had to take my hat off to TBWA for creating this series of ads for Apple and Laurie McGuinness for the counter-attack for Windows.

{ Ridiculous Design Rules }

"Because, ultimately, every rule related to, or governing, design is ridiculous..."

This is what was written on the cover of "Never Use White Type on a Black Background, and 50 other ridiculous design rules" published by BIS Publishers. As wrote on the introduction page:

The world of design is inundated with a seemingly endless list of rules. 'Less is more, 'form follows function', 'keep it simple', 'dress your age' and the list goes on and on. Some designers consider these rules as valuable words of wisdom, which serve as a guiding line and source of inspiration. Others perceive them as mere restrictions: design dogmas and fashion formulae that need to be bended, twisted or broken altogether. Whichever side of the fence you sit on in this whole rules debate, you're bound to find this book a source of inspiration, comfort, joy or just plain old fun. Because, ultimately, every rule related to, governing, design is ridiculous.

This book by BIS Publishers certainly brings joy and inspiration to me. Beside the 50 'good old rules' of design, it also have quotes from various famous creative people relating to individual rule. One of my favourite is by William A. Feather (1889-1981), an American author and publisher, for RULE 46 : Know your audience, "The philosophy behind much advertising is based on the old observation that every man is really two men – the man he is and the man he wants to be."

I don't agree to all of the 50 rules stated in the book, but there's some I can't agree more. The bottom line is design has no rules, just guidelines. To follow or not to, entirely up to individual. Anyways, design is about breaking the boundaries, not creating them. :)

Random-surfing got me to this site by an illustrator, Gabriel Moreno. Some of the works he produced are magnificent. I especially fancy his "More than illustration" series. The flow and simplicity of the series, keeps me wanting more. I'm so glad to discover his website. :)

About the illustrator:
Gabriel Moreno is an illustrator based in Madrid, graduated from Fine Arts in the University of Sevilla in 1998. Since then, he worked in different design studios and ad agencies in Andalusia. In 2004, he moves to Madrid. In June 2007, he begins to show his portfolio and after being selected amongst the 20 new talents of illustration, by the London based magazine Computer Arts, he begins his successful career as in illustrator.

I just managed to finish watching a documentary on Yoshitomo Nara called "A to Z, Traveling with Yoshitomo Nara". It features the behind the scene of Yoshitomo Nara's exhibitions around the world as well as his daily lifestyle. A up-closed and personal encounter with one of the most well-known contemporary artist of Japan now.

Yoshitomo Nara is well-known for his portraits of devilish-looking children, usually done closeup. Nara first came to the fore of the art world during Japan’s Pop art movement in the 1990s. The subject matter of his sculptures and paintings is deceptively simple: most works depict one seemingly innocuous subject (often pastel-hued children and animals drawn with confident, cartoonish lines) with little or no background. But these children, who appear at first to be cute and even vulnerable, sometimes brandish weapons like knives and saws. Their wide eyes often hold accusatory looks that could be sleepy-eyed irritation at being awoken from a nap—or that could be undiluted expressions of hate.

Nara, however, does not see his weapon-wielding subjects as aggressors. "Look at them, they [the weapons] are so small, like toys. Do you think they could fight with those?" he says. "I don’t think so. Rather, I kind of see the children among other, bigger, bad people all around them, who are holding bigger knives…"^[2]

Sometimes, the artist says, he receives zealous messages from fans. One even slipped a note into his pocket. I know exactly what you are saying, the note said, I understand. "Maybe they understand more about the work than me," he says modestly.

What is it about this art that elicits such a strong response? It doesn’t seem very complicated. The style is intentionally flat, with blunt, uniformly thick lines. This, combined with a lack of modeling, texture or strong coloration, seems to force attention to the subject matter. Yet there isn’t much of that. Narrative content? Not much of that either. Expressiveness? Not really.

Nara’s artwork "clicks" because we sense that beneath the sparse execution is a direct portal to a personal, almost intuitive vision.

"I only draw what I know from experience," Nara says. Since they embody specific memories, or impressions, the works take on a marshmallowy snapshot quality. Like illustrations from a deranged children’s textbook ("S is for Switchblade...") they are narratives, but with no temporal start or finish. As such, the works have an almost totemic completeness.

Stylistically, an artist can do two very brave things in their careers: a Picasso-like switching between unrecognizable styles, or a Morandi-like pursuit of the same relentless vision (the challenge here is to maintain a pitch of intensity across a long line of similar works). It could be said that Nara falls into the second category.

The artist says he has no choice in the matter; he is compelled to do these images: "Even if I try to draw something different, it always comes out this way."

His hand moves reflexively over the canvas, and the image emerges almost of itself. This has inspired some to call what Nara does a form of "automatism." Despite the implied mediumistic overtones, the artist sees this impulse as ultimately coming from himself.

Lauded by art critics and hipsters alike, Nara’s bizarrely intriguing works have gained him a cult following around the world.

After watching thoughts:
From the documentary, I felt that Nara is really a gem in the arts scene in Japan. He felt so child-like, as though he became famous without realizing it. Nara came across as a very humble person. A middle-aged man who refuses to grow up, someone who wants to live in the past, in his childhood.

It seem like many artists have an difficulty in expressing themselves in the crowd that is why they chose to use art as a form of communication. To really express how they feel.....

Martin Schoeller is a New York based photographer whose style is distinguished by similar treatment of all subjects whether they are celebrities or unknown. His most recognizable work are his portraits, shot with similar lighting, backdrop, and tone. His work appears in The New Yorker, Outside Magazine, Entertainment Weekly, Rolling Stone, GQ, Esquire, and Vogue.

I love the series of photography he did on CloseUp, so clean and minimalist....as if I could read into the subject's mind. Pretty stunting!

The Singapore's Speak Mandarin Campaign 2009 by Lim Sau Hoong (CEO/ECD of 10AM Communication) is just marvelous. Making a lot of Singaporeans finding it hard to swallow, the fact that foreign children are doing it better than the locals. iri5 is an artist who specialises in using non-traditional media such as old books, audio cassettes, playing cards, magazines etc, to create her works. In her series called "Ghost in the Machine" (shown below), she showcase a number of celebrities' portraits made out of recycled cassette tape with original cassette. Also in it are some made from old film and reels. iri5 got the inspiration from a philosopher's description of how your spirit lives in your body.

The other day, my copywriter passed me a photo-stated copy of an article from a book he got from a second-hand bookstore. It's pretty interesting.....Bluff you way in Advertising by Nigel Foster, first published by Ravette Books in 1988. It gives an insider's perspective of how Advertising actually functions (though it's 21 years ago, it's still pretty much the same now). As the book is not very thick, you wouldn't doze off reading it and you will love the author for his black humor. Totally sarcastic! If you guys can manage to find this book, do have a read. It's enjoyable.....

Creative Directors
The Creative Director runs the creative department, often the agency as well. Always be on the best possible terms with Creative Directors; when they leave to set up their own agency, they just might take you with them.

Art Directors
Art Directors are in theory responsible for the visual aspect of an ad or commercial. In practice, Art Directors will direct practically anything: the campaign, the account, the commercial, the agency, the client, and the personal lives of anyone they find attractive, or amusing, or both.

No-one is quite sure why Art Directors believe that they are good at everything - and why they are allowed to get away with it. Rumour has it this dates from the days when the Art Director controlled the supply of magic markers in the office; ot the Art Director was the only person who could put down Letraset without tearing half the characters.

Of course, nowadays everyone can have their own magic marker, while few Art Directors would demean themselves with Letraset (though with great cunning, most can Letraset with the best of them). You could hold the view that the exaggerated respect with which Art Directors are treated is because advertising people believe that:

artists can draw and understand perspective
Art Directors are artists
therefore Art Directors can draw and understand perspective

Bluffers know the fallacy here is the unconnected middle; namely, that any real drawing is usually done by an Illustrator or Visualiser.

What they think they do:
Produce superb advertising.
Co-operate with all their colleagues.
Battle bravely on despite those around them.

What they actually do:
Insist on trying to do everything themselves.
Reluctantly allow a small amount of copy to appear in a press ad (but only if it is set in six point)
Stare moodily into space for days on end.
Call in a freelancer when stuck for an idea.

How to handle:
Never flatter, never cajole. Always treat Art Directors as thorough-going professionals, even if they go missing ten minutes before a full client meeting. Always give them the credit for an idea the client thought brilliant, whoever actually thought of it. Find out who their favourite soccer team is, and get them the occasional ticket.

Copywriters
In many ways, Copywriters have the hardest job of all. For everyone, from the Art Director to the client, knows that they can write as good copy as the copywriter. Unfortunately they have more important things to do with their time.

In theory, Copywriters are responsible for all the words that appear in an ad, or the dialogue in a commercial. They are also supposed to produce those irritating tags and/or slogans without which no ad of any kind is considered to be complete. Should a bluffer ever become a Copywriter, the first thing to do is learn to draw. This will impress the client and infuriate the Art Director, and either way, you have gained a certain kudos.

What they think they do:
Produce superb advertising.
Possess a unique insight into the client's problems.
Write like a dream.
Have the ability to think visually.

What they actually do:
Spend days looking through books on great ads of the past for an idea.
Argue marketing strategy with the Account Handlers.
Spend most of their time working on their novel.
Drive the Art Director wild with strange ideas for the visual treatment of an ad.
Insist on writing all the camera directions for a commercial script.

How to handle:
Bluffers should first try wit. If that does not work, ask for help and sound as if you mean it. Never threaten physical violence. Overall beware Copywriters (male) with pigtails as they can be surprisingly unpredictable, and Copywriters (female) whom the managing director finds extremely attractive.

Recently I went to the exhibition, "各搞各的 : 鄙视当代" held in MOCA, Taipei (Museum of Contemporary Art).

It's my 2nd time there. I like the arts scene in Taiwan as I felt they are more open and experimental than in Singapore. Maybe because of the cultural difference of the two countries, Singapore being a rather conservative country and Taiwan is one with much Japanese influence. As a form of support to the local art scene, MOCA charges cheaply for the admission and the exhibition guide booklet costs only S$0.50.

各搞各的 : 鄙视当代 features some of the up-and-coming Chinese contemporary artists in China and Taiwan as well as artists from France, Holland, USA, England, Canada etc. A exhibition about Contemporary Arts - Is the exhibition suppose to reflect the art of the current moment, to have a unify theme? Or is art about individualism? 各搞各的 : 鄙视当代 attempts to unify 28 contemporary artists yet presents their uniqueness to the public, creating a complex spark between unity and uniqueness.

One of my favourite exhibit is a short video by 3Players (3P小组). Title of the video is called 相对论. The video showcases many individuals in pairs, of different age, background, gender and occupation. There were strangers, couples, siblings, families and old friends. They were asked to look face to face, eyes to eyes to each other for 3 mins without any conversation. Subtitles were shown featuring their thoughts throughout the 3 mins of silence. It's interesting to see how two persons of so much difference think of one another. Son: my dad is always so stern, never had a decent look at him.....he look old and wrinkled
Father: *staring hard without a smile*
Son: why is 3 min so long? So uncomfortable.
Father: well, you think 3 mins is long? I had been looking at you for 30 years......

The exhibit makes me wonder about the relationship between ourselves and people around us. At times, we take it for granted the existence of people.... perhaps we are all too busy with life and forget to slow down to take a good look at the people we loved.

Life had been very busy recent months....with work, personal stuffs etc. Been neglecting dAblog, often visit the site reading my past entries, waiting for a time or a topic to blog about. Seriously haven't been in touch with the design scene recently, except for the MOMA Taipei Exhibition i went to during my Feb vacation. Hmmm....well, talking about it, it will be my source of inspiration for my next few entries. So stay tuned!

Personal Views, now in its 4th year, is a unique series of conferences that brings together an unparalleled group of designers, writers and educators from the world of graphic design. Held by Escola Superior de Artes e Design in Matosinhos, Portugal, the series aims to examine contemporary definitions of graphic design by asking these professionals to talk about the values and objectives that have value for them. Tokyo Design Week 08 held from 30th Oct - 3 Nov, was an annual event during fall for the design/arts enthusiast.

Showcasing the latest and hottest stuff in artful design and designful art in the heart of Japan. Design/arts installations are featured around the town with main exhibition held at the 100% Design tentage located at Jingu Gaien Aoyama. Some of the internationally-known designers and artists exhibited their latest works for this special event, as well as collaborations with companies.

Yet another fantastic book by Paul Arden....

Paul Arden, author of the international bestseller It's Not How Good You Are, It's How Good You Want To Be (see former blogspot post), is a former executive creative director at Saatchi & Saatchi and a legend of British advertising....

Seriously I feel that this book isn't just meant for people in the creative field, it about Life in general for everyone out there....How to live a Life differently and be successful. I like the fact that Paul Arden always uses his sense of humor as he look at things supposedly to be serious. As I am more of a visual person, this book appeals to me considering the mass usage of images and not-to-long copies.

I am always amazed by children's pop-out books. How designers can ever thought of such amazing and faultless mechanism of doing the 3D pop-out illustrations to make it so damn interesting to children and also 'children-at-heart'.

I managed to grab hold of a fantastic 3D book at Basheer last Friday. Was blown away by the simplicity of the book, just by showing alphabets A to Z. The complexity of the mechanism was inspiring, I wonder what went on author/designer, Marion Bataille's mind when she is doing this book, ABC3D.

I was reading an article on PingMag about Japanese Graffiti....Guess most people had no idea that graffiti even exist in Japan, considering the fact that Japan is a systematic and clean country.

After two years of photographing in Japan, Australia Graffiti Artist, Remo Camerota complied the best street art of Japan in a book named Graffiti Japan. In the book, it shows the wonderful Graffiti that the Japanese had created. (By the way, there's legal spots in Japan for graffiti art)

Looking through the photos Remo took, Japanese Graffiti are a world's apart from the western counterparts. The Japanese artists showcase much dedication and details to their artwork. Perhaps it's due to the influence of the Manga Culture in Japan. Many of the graffiti shown are dynamic and colourful with interesting typography arrangement, a mixture of Kanji and Hiragana (types of japanese alphabets). But sad to say, many of the Japanese graffiti artists doesn't work in the creative industry, they all have a full-time job and only to look at graffiti as their passion.

Did I heard the answer.....Yes....It's Karim Rashid we're talking here.

Recently I had read Karim Rashid: Compact Design Portfolio by Marisa Bartolucci and Raul Cabra. It gave me an better idea of this phenomenon Designer and I must say, "He really is one determined man!" He nearly got kick-out of school because his designs & ideas were so over-the-top and his lecturers felt his works couldn't be fit into the reality. No company would use his works because they were too futuristic and unconventional. He had to sent in hundreds and hundreds of design proposal before one of them is selected....

Rashid advocates a "democratic" design sensibility, suggesting that high-quality design should be accessible to the masses; both literally, in the sense that it should not limited to expensive, limited-run objects; and figuratively, in the sense that an aspect of good design is that it should be appealing to most people. He has designed objects for major brands, including Alessi, Georg Jensen, Umbra, Kenzo, Prada, Issey Miyake, and Method. He seeks to change the aesthetics of product design, and the nature of consumer culture.

Happened to be doing a random read-up on Neville Brody when i came across Helvetica documentary clip on youtube.

It's a very interesting topic to begin with - Helvetica. *haha....You either love it or hate it till death. Well....I am the latter, though I can't help finding myself turning to Helvetica when I can't find a suitable font or when I'm too lazy to think.

I just placed an order on HelveticaFilm.com to get the documentary DVD. After watching the clips on youtube, I can't wait to get my hands on the DVD. With so many world-known typographers and designers involving in the making of the video, it must have been very inspiring for designers!

My most respected Animator, Hayao Miyazaki...I wouldn't never miss a film by him & Studio Ghibli. From My Neighbor Totoro, Laputa: Castle in the Sky to Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle; he showcased incredible talents and characters. His animes are much child-like, full of imagination and colours, in his films nothing was impossible....

Entrance Mural that the designers drew on

Last Sunday I went to the Singapore's 1st Toy & Comic Convention held by Play Imaginative. Was happy to see some of the international toy designers. People like Mori Chack (Gloomy Bear), Simone Legno (tokidoki), Devilrobot Team (Tofu Oyaku), Pete Fowler (Monsterism / Play Beast) and Touma (Knuckle Bear). Live Demo & Autography sessions were some of the highlights that i am looking forward to. As for the rest of the programmes (Cosplay competition etc)... ermmm seriously who cares...*lol

The crowd was disgusting... Everytime there's a fair, it seem like the whole of Singapore would come, even when they know nuts about designers' toys. Well... that's Singaporeans... Here's what i overheard some Singaporeans talked as they Q-up for autography:

A: "Wah! who's that ang mo?"
B: "I think it's the artist who do the toys lor."
C: " Like that arh.... better go buy the toy let them sign. Got value leh!"

I nearly fainted when i heard that... how could they?? how could they not know the designers yet blindly buy their stuffs? I don't understand.... Anyway, here some photos i took at the Convention... & I must really say this, "THE TOYS WERE DAMN NICE!...price also nice...." Hope next year they will continue the convention. It's great meeting designers that inspired you.

{ a NOT-so Oddinary Exhibtion }

Yesterday I went for my RMIT Juniors' GradShow at Alliance Francise @ Newton.... well...what can I say...wasn't extremely fascinated with the works showcased.

I was wondering perhaps i was too picky...Overall the GradShow was pretty well, with the whole "Box" concept in tag and inviting international designers to design their own box.. Can say "OMG! This year they really have budget!" *evil-grinned.

Sad to say that I think Temasek's Design GradShow was much better, I wonder what had gone wrong? Reflected this to our course administrator, Jane, could tell that she was quite disappointed..."Sorry Jane, but i think i should tell you the truth as a person from the Industry." I am wondering if it's because of the larger number of graduates (33pax) this year? Or is it the fact that (from their explaination) that most of them are from video / interactive background? I couldn't pick on one specific, perhaps both?

Guilt-filled, I took another look at the Oddinary GradBook....maybe it's not as bad as i tot....going through the pages, I could merely find an outstanding students perhaps just 1 or 2...(i shall not name them here) but it's not the top student's work that i like...then again design is very subjective...

Anyways, Best of Luck to the Green-Horns! Hope you guys get the dream job...

These guys are the most creative bunch of people....and fun-loving too. They knew i love toys and of cause my trademark Character, dA comes into play. Creating my character from a toy and forms it into the most memorable packaging. Reading through the packaging brings "sourness" to my nose, as if tears are rolling out. It contains our fondness memories we had in our company, from the silly Thinkads Fist Game we created to the imitation of all our laughters by our dear YuanHong, memories that only we knew.

I had the greatest time with these bunch of people, definitely will miss them....

It proves that if you treat people with True Heart, they will know...so what if sometimes people take advantage of your kind soul? as long as you have a clear conscious, everything else are not important. As a designer, i think i have a clear conscious....

Who said you have to be a fierce Art Director to be able to control your designers? Who said you have to play mind games to get your things done?

Be true to everyone and they will be true to you too....

Perhaps not alot of you guys have heard of the agency "Neighbor"..... Recently i went through Neighbor's website, find it really good so thought of introducing to you guys. Maybe you guys wonder why would i know this agency....Well....it's set-up by my TP's senior and the fact that they are the one who did Takashimaya's 10th Anninversary Campaign got me interested.

Browsing through the 'not - updated - in - the - longest - time' website, i found some quite interesting projects that they have done. Their strength is at graphic designing though they did some advertising. If you took a closer look at their work, you could tell that well-usage of vibrant colors and visual impact are some of the characteristic of Neighbor. Perhaps the high-quality in their work is due to the fact that the Boss is a designer-working-4-passion himself, not some marketing/business-driven Boss who think they know design.......

For those who knows me well know that i am a BIG fan of Japanese manga. ONE PIECE got to be one of my all-time favourite manga. I really got to take my hats off to Eiichiro Oda, the creator of ONE PIECE, for his inspiring storyline and unlimited imagination that brings out the Peter Pan in all of us. At a young age of 22, he created ONE PIECE....i wonder how many 22 years old could be as successful as him.

ONE PIECE focuses on a ragtag crew of heoric pirates, formed and led by Monkey D. Luffy. Luffy's greatest ambition is to obtain the world's ultimate treasure, One Piece, and become the Great Pirate King at the end of the Grand Line. ONE PIECE has a large amount of characters, many of which are either pirates or marines. The main protagonist is Monkey D. Luffy, the captain of the Straw Hats Pirates. He leads a crew of eight other pirates: Roronoa Zoro, Nami, Usopp, Sanji, Tony Tony Chopper, Nico Robin, Franky, and Brook. Each member has their own dream that is furthered by joining the Straw Hats.....

A little info on the creator:

Eiichiro Oda, a legendary manga artist, was born in 1 January 1975 in Kumamoto, Japan, best known as the creator of manga and anime ONE PIECE. As a child, Eiichiro was inspired by vikings and aspired to become a manga artist.

At the age of 17, he submitted his work "Wanted" and won several awards, including second place in the coveted Tezuka Awards. That got him into a job at the Weekly Shonen Jump magazine, where he originally worked as assistant to Shinobu Kaitani's series "Suizan Police Gang" before moving to Masaya Tokuhiro on "Jungle King Tar-chan" and "Mizu no Tomodachi Kappaman", which gave him an unexpected influence on his artistic style. At the age of 19, he worked as an assistant to Nobuhiro Watsuki on "Rurouni Kenshin", before winning the Hop Step Award for new artists.

During this time, he drew two pirate-themed one-shot stories, called "Romance Dawn", which would debut in Monthly and Weekly Jump in late 1996-early 1997. In 1997, at the age of 22, ONE PIECE appeared for the first time in Weekly Shonen Jump and promptly became one of the most popular manga in Japan (after the Dragon Ball series). His biggest influence is Akira Toriyama, creator of "Dragon Ball"and "Dr. Slump".

Thinking with Type by Ellen Lupton, like the book title is about typography....it gives you a overall knowledge on what is typography and a basic history on different fonts families. The content of the book is broken down into 3 categories, Text, Letter and Grid.

The one i bought was the Chinese-edition, it's because Chinese-edition costs alot cheaper than the English one. It costs only S$23 for a 200-pages design book (worth it ya?)......for me it doesn't matter if it's english or chinese as i am comfortable reading both....

SABON
Style: Humanist or Old Style
This family of 15th - 16th Century Roman font type is a reflection of ancient calligraphy style. Created by Jan Tschichold in 1966, he developed SABON with the use of 16th Century's CLAUDE GARAMOND as a guide.

BASKERVILLE
Style: Transitional
This family of font is known to be more distinct than Humanist, the strokes are more define. When BASKERVILLE is created in the mid-18th Century, its highly-distinctive shape alarmed the typography industy.

BODONI
Style: Modern
This font created by Bodoni in end of 18th Century is extremely abstract. Notice its thin and straight serif, as well as it's thick and thin strokes, creating a dynamic difference in the letters.

GILL SANS
Style: Humanist Sans Serif
Sans Serif font types are very common in the 20th Century. Created by Eric Gill in 1928, it has the characteristic of a Humanist font. Notice the lowercase 'a', its small yet smooth counter and its calligraphy-like usage of thin and thick strokes.

HELVETICA
Style: Transitional Sans Serif
HELVETICA is created by Max Miedinger in 1957, is one of the world's most widely-used font. Its straight and balanced font is a representation of Transitional font. This family of font is also known as the world famous Transitional sans serif font.

FUTURA
Style: Geometric Sans Serif
This series of type created by Paul Renner in 1927, who sought an "honest expression of technical processes". FUTURA has its 'o' done in a complete circular shape and its uppercase 'A' and 'M' have their top tip in a shape of a sharp triangle.

Many of the local designers fail to see the importance of Typography, something that may seen insignificant and small as to compare with VISUALS. Me, myself was once the same as the rest, till my study in RMIT where i met my typography lecturer, Stephen Banham. An internationally-known typographer who perhaps is the only person in history to have been recognised in the street as a campaigner against a typeface (HELVETICA). *LOL....

* Stephen Banham is an Australian graphic designer, writer and founder of Letterbox, a typograhic studio in Melbourne. Born in Melbourne in 1968. He studied graphic design at RMIT University from 1986-88. In 2003 he completed a Master of Design research from RMIT.

His design work has been covered in Emigré, Baseline and Eye, in most international type annuals and featured in many international type exhibitions earning him many typography awards. He has lectured in typography at RMIT University since 1991. He has also guest lectured at most Australian design colleges as well as in New Zealand, Barcelona, the United Kingdom, and has spoken at the New York Type Directors Club.*

Having him as my lecturer actually let me realised how much i sucks in typography... Kerning, Leading, Widow, Orphan..... all sorts of small details that designers should have taken note when doing their design... Headers & Logotype aren't just about choosing the right font type, spacing in between letters are important too.... Don't just type it out without look twice at it and the fact that 1 is always standing far away when placing together with other characters. Manual kerning is essential in this case... Because he made me realised how bad i am in typography, i began to read up more on typographic books.... After which, it shone some lights in me, in fact, i think it is a whole new world waiting to be explored by designers.

Many of us are always using Helvetica or Futura when laying texts, it had became a default to just click and select them. Which in long run is a very sad thing, you will never break away from the same look because you had been always using the same font.

I told myself i have to learn more and break away from the default so as to grow stronger as a designer. This should be the case for every designer, to find your own weakest point and face it bravely and you will grow eventually.....
